What makes Pantry Fresh® different from other fresh dog food?
Most fresh dog food is frozen. Meals are prepared, portioned, and delivered frozen on a recurring schedule, requiring dedicated freezer space, planned defrosting 12–24 hours in advance, and a reliable delivery window. The food is genuinely nutritious, but the logistics are a real barrier for many households.
Pantry Fresh® removes that barrier entirely. Marleybones seals raw ingredients directly into the pouch, then slow-cooks the sealed pack at around 89°C. This retort cooking process, the same technique used in premium baby food production, achieves two things simultaneously: it cooks the food to a safe temperature, eliminating pathogens, and it creates a hermetically sealed environment that keeps the food shelf-stable at room temperature without any preservatives. The ingredients never come into contact with air or external bacteria during or after cooking, which is why the unopened pouch can be used for up to 18 months on a cupboard shelf.
The practical result is fresh food nutrition without any of the frozen food logistics. Meals are ready to serve whenever you need them, work equally well at home or travelling, and do not depend on a freezer being available.
What ingredients are in Pantry Fresh® meals?
Every Pantry Fresh® recipe is built on 60%+ real meat or fish as the primary ingredient, with whole vegetables and seven functional ingredients included in every recipe. The functional ingredient blend comprises chicory root (a natural prebiotic rich in inulin), quinoa, chia seeds, hemp seeds, linseeds, and yucca, each included for a specific nutritional or digestive reason rather than as a marketing addition.
There are four recipes in the current Pantry Fresh® range: Chic Chicken, Boss Beef, Lush Lamb and Sassy Salmon. Each uses a single named protein source, which makes it straightforward to identify what suits a specific dog and useful for dogs with sensitivities who need a simple, traceable ingredient list. None of the recipes contain preservatives, artificial additives, fillers, or added sugar.

How does the cooking process affect nutritional quality?
Cooking at 89°C does affect some heat-sensitive vitamins, particularly vitamin C and some B vitamins, to a degree. This is true of any cooking process, including the gentle cooking used by frozen fresh food brands before freezing. The effect is not unique to Pantry Fresh® and does not result in a nutritionally incomplete product; the recipes are formulated to account for typical cooking losses and verified by a vet nutritionist to meet FEDIAF standards post-cooking.
What the in-pack cooking process preserves well is protein quality, fat profile, and the functional properties of the prebiotic ingredients, particularly the inulin in chicory root. The gentle temperature and the sealed environment mean the ingredients are cooked once, in their own juices, without the repeated temperature changes that degrade nutritional quality in more heavily processed formats.
Is Pantry Fresh® suitable for all dogs?
Yes. All Pantry Fresh® recipes are formulated to meet FEDIAF nutritional standards for all life stages, meaning they are suitable for puppies, adult dogs, and seniors without modification. The soft texture makes them particularly well suited to puppies whose jaws are still developing and seniors who may have dental wear, and the high moisture content (65–75%) supports hydration and digestive function across all life stages.
Dogs with sensitive stomachs tend to do well on Pantry Fresh® because the combination of highly digestible whole ingredients, gentle cooking, and natural prebiotics supports gut health directly. In the Marleybones customer survey of 1,056 subscribers, 71% reported better digestion and stool quality after switching. For dogs with specific food allergies, the single-protein recipe format makes it straightforward to avoid trigger ingredients while maintaining a complete and balanced diet.
How does Pantry Fresh® compare to frozen fresh dog food on nutrition?
The two formats are broadly comparable on nutritional completeness. Both use whole, minimally processed ingredients and are formulated to meet FEDIAF standards. The main difference is in the cooking approach: frozen fresh brands typically cook at lower temperatures before freezing, or leave some ingredients partially raw, while Pantry Fresh® uses a single in-pack cooking process at 89°C. Neither approach is considered superior on all nutritional measures based on the current evidence, and both are better than heavily processed dry or standard wet food on digestibility.
Where Pantry Fresh® has a clear practical advantage is storage and convenience. No freezer required, no delivery timing dependency, no defrosting. For households where the frozen logistics are a genuine barrier to fresh feeding, Pantry Fresh® delivers the same nutritional standard without the friction.

FAQs
Does Pantry Fresh® need to be refrigerated?
Not before opening. Pantry Fresh® meals are shelf-stable at room temperature for up to 18 months unopened. Once opened, refrigerate and use within 2–3 days. The same storage principles apply whether you are at home, travelling, or on holiday.
Is Pantry Fresh® the same as wet dog food?
No. Pantry Fresh® is fresh dog food, not wet food. Standard wet food is produced by blending ingredients and sterilising at high temperatures, typically above 120°C, which degrades heat-sensitive nutrients and results in a more processed product. Pantry Fresh® uses whole, identifiable ingredients cooked at a lower temperature in a sealed pouch, producing a more nutritious and palatable result than standard wet food.
Can puppies eat Pantry Fresh® meals?
Yes. All Pantry Fresh® recipes are FEDIAF compliant for all life stages including puppies. The soft texture is particularly well suited to puppies whose jaws and teeth are still developing, and the natural prebiotics in every recipe support the developing gut microbiome.
How much Pantry Fresh® should I feed my dog?
Feeding quantities depend on your dog's weight, age, and activity level. Marleybones provides a personalised feeding guide as part of the subscription plan, calculated from the details you provide during the quiz. As a general guide, Pantry Fresh® starts from £1.96 per day for a 5kg dog on a full plan.
Can I feed Pantry Fresh® alongside kibble?
Yes. Marleybones offers half plans specifically designed for owners who want to mix Pantry Fresh® with kibble, either as a stepping stone to full fresh feeding or as a longer-term approach. When mixing, total daily calorie intake should be calculated across both foods rather than following the full serving guidelines for each independently.
