How to Celebrate International Dog Day: Give Your Dog a Yes Day

Every day is dog day, but 26 August makes it official. Here is our favourite way to mark International Dog Day: give your dog a Yes Day, and keep the best yeses for good.

Ask any dog owner whether every day is dog day and you will get the same answer, usually while a tail thumps somewhere nearby: honestly, yes. International Dog Day just makes it official once a year. Our favourite way to mark it is simple. Give your dog a Yes Day. One day where all the usual answers flip, and the things you normally say no to become the whole point. And here is the lovely part, which we will come back to: once you have done it, you tend to keep a few of those yeses for good.

When is International Dog Day 2026?

International Dog Day 2026 falls on Wednesday 26 August. It is the same date every year, and it is also known as National Dog Day, so you will see both names used for the same occasion.

What is International Dog Day?

International Dog Day is a yearly celebration of dogs of every shape, size and temperament. It began as a way to champion dogs in need of homes, and it has grown into a wider thank-you to the dogs already curled up in ours. There is no wrong way to do it, which is exactly why a Yes Day works so well. You are not following a script, you are just letting your dog have the day their way.

How to give your dog a Yes Day

The rules are gloriously simple. For one day, you say yes. Here is where to start.

Yes to the good dinner

If there is one thing worth saying yes to, it is what goes in the bowl. And here is the happy part: feeding your dog well is a kindness you get to repeat every single day, no occasion required, which is really the whole point of it. A portion of freshly cooked food, warmed for a minute to lift the smell, turns dinner from routine into the highlight of the day. The feeding quiz builds a personalised plan around your dog's age, size and needs, so a good dinner is the everyday standard, not a one-off. Then stand back and let the tail do its thing.

Yes to the whole walk

Most walks run on our schedule. A Yes Day walk runs on theirs. Let your dog set the pace, choose the direction, and stop to read every fascinating gatepost and hedge for as long as they like. A walk led entirely by the nose is one of the most satisfying things in a dog's world, and it costs you nothing but a slower morning.

Yes to their favourite game

Every dog has their thing, whether that is a battered tennis ball, a tug rope, or a good old-fashioned chase round the garden. Lean right into whatever lights your dog up, because nobody knows your dog like you do. A handful of air-dried treats scattered in the grass to sniff out turns five spare minutes into a proper adventure. Watching a dog do the thing they love best never gets old.

Yes to the best seat in the house

You know the spot. The one that is usually off limits, that they eye up hopefully every evening. Today it is theirs. A Yes Day is the perfect excuse to bend the house rules and let your dog snuggle up somewhere they are normally shooed away from. Few things build a bond like a shared afternoon nap in the good seat.

Yes to your undivided attention

Not every yes needs to be an activity. More than any toy or treat, the thing your dog wants most is you, present and paying attention. Twenty minutes with the phone down, doing nothing but being together, is worth more to them than almost anything you could buy. Dogs are the great masters of enjoying an ordinary afternoon, and a Yes Day is a fine time to join them.

Here is the part we promised to come back to. Once you have given your dog a proper Yes Day, you tend to notice how many of those little yeses are worth keeping. The warm dinner, the slower walk, the extra fuss. None of them really need a date on the calendar. That is what International Dog Day is quietly nudging us towards: not one grand gesture, but the everyday business of loving a dog well. Because as far as your dog is concerned, every day is dog day, and they mostly just want you in it. Happy International Dog Day from all of us at Marleybones.
