How is Marleybones different from other dog food?
Where to even begin! Marleybones is a sustainable dog food subscription that delivers highly nutritious and tailor-made plans directly to your doorstep. We’re also proud to be the world’s first and only dog food company with a guaranteed net-zero plastic footprint. Our food is made from sustainable fresh ingredients and comes in a 100% recyclable and pantry friendly packaging. Marleybones is the dog dining solution that’s better for your dog and better for our planet.
What does pantry fresh™ mean?
At Marleybones, we are proud to offer pantry fresh™ meals that remain fresh for up to 18 months when stored in a cupboard. Unlike other products that use preservatives, additives, or other undesirable ingredients that compromise the nutritional balance of the food, our innovative packaging and cooking methods help us achieve a shelf-stable product without sacrificing quality.
What makes Marleybones healthier than other wet food products?
It’s all about nutrient quality. We only use freshly prepared meat and fish, healthy vegetables and superfoods such as chia and hemp seeds. When it comes to cooking our meals, we also do it a little differently. We get in all our ingredients fresh and fill them raw into the cartons, seal the cartons and then we steam cook the entire carton from the outside. Steam cooking is one of the gentlest cooking methods, as it keeps all the natural moisture, vitamins and minerals coming from the fresh produce within the meals, locking in all the freshness, flavour and nutrients. This guarantees maximum nutrient absorption, palatability and food safety for your dogs. And did we mention our packaging? Our cartons comes in 100% recyclable and pantry friendly packaging. We’re also proud to be the world’s first and only dog food company with a guaranteed net-zero plastic footprint!
How are Marleybones meals made?
We’ve worked alongside some fantastic nutritionists who help us formulate our complete and nutritionally balanced dining menu. We gently steam cook the meals to contain as many nutrients as possible.
Why is Marleybones more expensive than other pet foods?
Sustainable dog dining full of nutritious, superfood ingredients is reflected in the price. We also want to make sure we’re not partaking in practises that is harmful to our earth. This is just a few of the things that we believe makes Marleybones well worth the cost: 1) We only use freshly prepared meat and fish and add lots of healthy veggies and superfoods on top of this. 2) Our packaging is made from mainly plant-based materials and is 100% recyclable and plastic neutral. 3) Co2 neutral deliveries is included in your subscription every month.
Are Marleybones' meals shelf stable?
Our meals can keep fresh for 18 months unopened. This is something we achieve with a quite innovative cooking method. We basically get in all our ingredients farm fresh and fill them raw into the cartons, seal the cartons and then we steam cook the entire carton from the outside. Steam cooking is one of the gentlest cooking methods, as it keeps all the natural moisture, vitamins and minerals coming from the fresh produce within the meals, locking in all the freshness, flavour and nutrients. This guarantees maximum nutrient absorption, palatability and food safety for our dogs. The cartons we use are designed for this process, protecting the fresh ingredients on the inside and keeping our meals shelf stable without the use of nasty preservatives. Once opened, our meals keep fresh for another 48 hours in the fridge! You can just flip down the carton sides to reseal them. The cartons are also 100% recyclable and is made from recyclable, plant based materials. You may also freeze the meals, which can be beneficial during the hot summer months (just fill the food into a Kong or similar and feed directly).
Is Marleybones' packaging plastic-free?
With Marleybones, we’re aiming to improve more than our dogs’ lives. We’re aiming to improve unnecessary waste. For every meal you purchase, we fund the removal of the same amount of plastic waste that is used in our packaging and production line from landfills to be recycled and repurposed. By partnering with rePurpose Global we’re able to protect our vulnerable earth and all it has to offer by carrying a net-zero plastic footprint. Better for your dog, better for the planet.
Is Marleybones suitable for puppies?
Yes! Even the little ones are able to enjoy a full Marleybones menu. Each of our gently cooked meals have been developed to make sure your puppy is getting everything it needs to grow strong and healthy. Through our algorithm, we’ve made sure to adjust accordingly so they receive extra nutrition from the age of 2-12 months.
Is Marleybones hypoallergenic?
We are certain most dogs will thrive with Marleybones dog dining. Our recipes are easy to digest and great with sensitive tummies. We’ve made sure not to include known allergens like cereals (wheat, barley, oats and maize) and vegetable protein (pea protein, maize/wheat gluten and soya). Instead we use unprocessed, human-grade ingredients in all our single-source protein meals. If your dog should be allergic to any type of meat or fish, you will be able to exclude the variant from your dining box.
Should I consult my vet before changing to Marleybones?
We’ve worked alongside a dedicated team of nutritional experts and pet nutritionist to create the best possible dog dining meals for our four-legged best friends. That said, you are more than welcome to consult with your vet before making the change. If your dog has any health issues or allergies, we always recommend checking in with your vet before starting on a new food.
How often should I feed my dog?
There is no rule-set when it comes to how often your dog should be fed. Twice a day is generally a good place to start. More important than feeding frequency is meal portion size. Luckily, by going through our questionnaire, we will calculate exactly how much your dog should be fed based on age, activity levels and more.
Do I need to freeze the food?
One of the benefits of Marleybones meals, is that you don’t need to clear your freezer for ice-cream and just need to store them in a cool, dry place. As a bonus, they take up much less space than the traditional and is easy to stack and store.
Do you have different plan options?
We always recommend feeding your dog 100% Marleybones to guarantee your dog gets all the essential vitamins and minerals needed to maintain a healthy diet – all day, every day. We do however have a mixed plan option, if you wish to mix Marleybones with other food and the usual treats and snacks. Finally, you have the option of changing to exactly the plan size you want and include just the meals your dog prefer.
Why does the meals change colour from time to time?
Dont worry, that's actually perfectly normal. We use all natural ingredients and the batches will therefore look slightly different from time to time - just as nature intended!
Is Marleybones a nutritionally complete dog food?
Yes! Health is one the main drivers behind Marleybones and we want to make the best and most delicious dog food as we possibly can. As long as your dog eats our food as recommended by our nutritional consultation, you can be assured your dog is getting everything it needs. We’ve worked alongside dedicated experts in dog nutrition to make sure all our meal live up to the highest standards.
Is Marleybones grain-free?
Yes – all our meals are grain-free! Many believe quinoa is a grain, but it is in fact a seed that is harvested from a tall, leafy plant. Quinoa is actually more of a relative to spinach or beets. Because they are cooked like a grain, they seem to get lumped into the same grain category.
Why can’t I just cook dog food at home?
You can! However, recent research found 95% of recipes online to be lacking in important nutrients for dogs. If the recipe hasn’t been properly calibrated, serious complications from nutrient deficiencies could arise. All Marleybones meals have been through lots of tests to make sure your dog always gets the nutrients it needs.
Why do you add vitamins and minerals to your meals?
Right from the get-go, the purpose of Marleybones was to create complete and nutritionally balanced meals for pooches. This means that feeding your dog the recommended daily amount will ensure they get everything they need to stay healthy and energised every day. Ingredients can naturally fluctuate in their nutritional content making it very difficult to guarantee a complete meal without adding some vitamins and minerals. We try to keep it as natural as possible, but we also want to be sure your dog is getting everything it needs - every time. We want to offer your dog a complete, delicious dog dining experience you can feel good about!
Do you add bones and offal to your recipes?
We believe in using all the animal parts that have health benefits for dogs. It is less wasteful for our earth and creates healthier diets for our dogs.
Does Marleybones add sugar to its meals?
There is no added sugar in any of our meals, but it does occur naturally in some of the veggies we use (carrots, peas...).
What is the protein content of Marleybones meals?
Our dining menu contains 60% freshly prepared meat or fish, all locally sourced right here in Great Britain. Since our meals aren’t extruded and ‘dry’ like kibble, it may look like it is low in protein levels reaching between 11-15%. This is because we keep all the natural, flavorsome juices inside our meals giving it a higher moisture content than dry food. Calculating our meals’ protein levels on a ‘dry matter’ basis, they actually contain between 44-50%.
Do you have a vegetarian or vegan menu?
It’s something we’re considering, but we want to research this topic more. Unfortunately, dogs cannot digest plant proteins as well as those found in meats, so we want to make absolutely sure we have a healthy and digestible product before adding it to our product line. Please do contact us if you’re interested.
Do you have a list of all your ingredients?
Transparency is at the heart of Marleybones and that goes for our ingredients too. Every ingredient is listed here on our website and again on our packaging.
I can see fat in my dog’s meals. Why is that?
All our meals are made from freshly prepared meat and will be cooked in its own juices, giving our meals its natural and delicious flavour. With fresh meat comes natural marbling, however we have made sure to source as lean meat as possible. That being said, not all fat is bad! Chia and linseeds are high in omega 3 fatty acids, which are great for keeping a healthy brain and a shiny coat
Is Marleybones raw?
No – we gently steam cook our food! Often raw food is of great quality, but we do think dealing with raw food has its challenges especially when ensuring it contains all essential nutrients for a complete diet. Instead, we gently steam cook our meals which kills pathogens and may increase taste and smell.
Do your recipes align with FEDIAF standards?
Yes, our recipes are formulated by a pet nutritionist, they are completed and balanced and aligned with FEDIAF standards.

My dog is losing weight
Dog's metabolism vary, so sometimes we need to adjust the meal plan based on the individual dog. We usually recommend upping your dog's meal size with 1-2 dining(s) per day and go from there. If you start noticing your dog's stools get sloppier towards the end, it might be a sign you’ve reached his/hers limit and is overfeeding, so just keep an eye out for such changes. My dog is gaining weight
Dog's metabolism vary, so sometimes we need to adjust the meal plan based on the individual dog. We usually recommend lowering your dog's meal size with 1-2 dining(s) per day in order to loose weight. You can easily change to a smaller meal plan on your profile. If you login to 'My Subscription' you’ll find an overview of your dog’s food. Below you will find the option to 'Change meal plan'. Why is the recommended meal plan different to my current feeding guide?
It is always difficult to compare gram to gram between different foods and brands as the makeup of the meals and calorie content can vary vastly, which ultimately determines the amount of food required to obtain all the nutrients required from your food. The food’s bioavailability will also impact the amount needed for the body to absorb the nutrients in your meals. The source and grade of ingredients is a big factor in food quality and nutrient absorption, and among the reasons why Marleybones is such a nutrient dense food. That said, we can always make adjustments to your meal plan if you find your dog requires more or less food. Some dogs just have a higher or lower metabolism than others and requires a few more or less calories. No two dogs are the same, so we are always here to help make any personal adjustments if needed.
I don’t see a mixed plan option
This would be the case if you’re already on our smallest plan available (14 cartons a month). If you prefer to feed a smaller amount, you can always postpone your deliveries so it fits with your feeding guide at home! If you push your meals by a month, it would half your plan in two.
I don’t want a subscription
We only sell our products on a subscription based model. Our packaging is not made to be sold on an individual basis, as all plans are tailored and sold to fit with each dog's needs. This is instead of having an individual feeding guide on pack that wouldn’t be as accurate. We do this to make sure all dogs receive the correct amount and type of food. That said, our plans are fully flexible and you can simply push your delivery date to a date that fits you. You can also easily stop your subscription and only activate once in a while when you need to stock up. You also have the choice between our mixed and full plan. Do remember you also always can start with our taster box to see if the food is the right fit for your dog.
How much storage do I need?
Our cartons are really easy to store and stack! Fit them neatly in any cupboard, ready for serving up your dog dining. Only once opened should you keep your meals refrigerated to maintain optimal freshness. Through the innovative steam cooking of our meals, your food is kept fresh while stored in the pantry and free from any added preservatives. Now… Step away from the freezer.

Is Marleybones suitable for dog's with epilepsy?
Dog’s with epilepsy should opt for a high-quality, balanced diet that contains high-quality ingredients, essential nutrients, and a balanced ratio of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Not only does Marleybones tick those boxes, we do not include any additives or preservatives or fillers that may potentially trigger seizures in some dogs. Natural, whole-food ingredients is the best option here. Some dogs with epilepsy may have also specific food triggers that can provoke seizures. Common triggers include certain artificial additives, allergens, and gluten, all ingredients we don’t use in our food. It’s also very important to establish a consistent feeding schedule for your dog and avoid sudden changes in their diet. Regular mealtimes and portion control can also help maintain stable blood sugar levels and minimise potential triggers, which is why a monthly pre-portioned meal plan works wonders.
Is Marleybones suitable for dog's with pancreatitis?
One of the best ways to manage pancreatitis is through your dog’s diet. The pancreas is the organ that releases the enzymes that break down food during digestion. Most vets will agree that the first step is to feed a reduced-fat diet, since the pancreas is responsible for breaking down fat during digestion. Additionally, it’s extremely important to feed high-quality fats from known sources rather than lower grade fats. At Marleybones, we use single-sourced protein from meat and fish that has high levels of Omega-3 and less saturated fat – it’s very important the fat in your dog’s diet is digestible which you’ll be sure to get by feeding Marleybones. You can check the fat content of our recipes under ‘Products’ at the top of our website. If your dog has pancreatitis, we always recommend speaking with your vet before switching.
Is Marleybones suitable for dog's who need a low purine diet?
If your dog requires a low purine diet, we always recommend speaking with your vet before switching to a new diet. Some dogs, typically Dalmatians, possess a specific gene that hinders their ability to effectively remove purines, a type of waste body protein. This condition can result in bladder inflammation, urinary tract infections, the presence of blood in the urine, or the formation of bladder stones. To manage these issues, it is typically necessary for these dogs to follow a low protein and purine diet. Therefore, we do not recommend feeding Marleybones if your dog require a low protein and purine diet. Your dog will most likely require a prescription diet.
