How is Marleybones different from other dog food?
Where to even begin! We trace your dog’s dinner straight from farm to bowl using blockchain technology. We feel it’s important to not only tell the story of our product, but also make sure you know the farmers, production team and everyone in between. High animal welfare, the environment and of course health is top priority for Marleybones. Eat good while doing good! Tail-waggingly-wonderful right?
What makes Marleybones healthier than other wet food products?
It’s all about nutrient quality. It’s becoming more and more clear that the source and grade of ingredients are paramount to assessing food quality! Our high animal welfare ensures our meat proteins are higher in nutrients from their natural diets. We also only source fresh meats, instead of proteins from vegetable derivatives. Adding to that, we use farm fresh vegetable and add superfoods, like chia and linseeds, to give that extra sprinkle of health that differentiates us from low grade pet foods. All gently steam cook freshly from the farms to maintain all the natural vitamins and nutrients.
How are Marleybones meals made?
We’ve worked alongside some fantastic nutritionists who help us formulate our complete and nutritionally balanced dining menu. We gently steam cook the meals to contain as many nutrients as possible.
Why is Marleybones more expensive than other pet foods?
Sustainable dog dining full of nutritious, locally sourced ingredients is reflected in the price. We want to make sure we’re not partaking in practises that hurt animals or our earth. Ingredient quality, sustainability and transparency is key to what makes Marleybones well worth the cost. Dogs eating nutritionally balanced meals with lots of natural goodness will be healthier, happier and more energized. Not to mention that shiny, soft cuddly fur!
Are Marleybones' meals shelf stable?
How can a carton keep food safe, full of flavour and bursting with nutritional value for months on the shelf? Marleybones is a long-lasting product, but without the nasty preservatives! We all want to know our food and beverages are safe, fresh and full of nutrition and flavour when they reach us. With an innovative approach to packaging even the most sensitive of foods will stand the test of time. Tetra Pak’s highly sterile aseptic packaging solutions ensure products have at least eighteen-months shelf life without the need for refrigeration or preservatives. The aseptic process ensures that both food and packaging materials are free of harmful bacteria when food is packaged.
Is Marleybones' packaging plastic-free?
The core packaging material is renewably sourced paperboard – just enough to make the package stable, while being as light as possible. The board is flanked on either side by polythene – on the outside to protect against external moisture and on the inside to enable the paperboard to stick to the next layer - aluminium foil. Aluminium foil protects against oxygen and light and maintains the nutritional value and flavours of the contents. Two further layers of polythene on the innermost surface separate the food from the aluminium and add further protection. Although the packages are made of mixed materials, modern recycling methods can separate the layers so the individual materials can be recycled and reused.
Is Marleybones suitable for puppies?
Yes! Even the little ones are able to enjoy a full Marleybones menu. Each of our gently cooked meals have been developed to make sure your puppy is getting everything it needs to grow strong and healthy. Through our algorithm, we’ve made sure to adjust accordingly so they receive extra nutrition from the age of 2-12 months.
Is Marleybones hypoallergenic?
We are certain most dogs will thrive with Marleybones dog dining. Our recipes are easy to digest and great with sensitive tummies. We’ve made sure not to include known allergens like cereals (wheat, barley, oats and maize) and vegetable protein (pea protein, maize/wheat gluten and soya). Instead we use unprocessed, human-grade ingredients in all our single-source protein meals. If your dog should be allergic to any type of meat or fish, you will be able to exclude the variant from your dining box.
Should I consult my vet before changing to Marleybones?
We’ve worked alongside a dedicated team of nutritional experts and pet nutritionist to create the best possible dog dining meals for our four-legged best friends. That said, you are more than welcome to consult with your vet before making the change. If your dog has any health issues or allergies, we always recommend checking in with your vet before starting on a new food.
How often should I feed my dog?
There is no rule-set when it comes to how often your dog should be fed. Twice a day is generally a good place to start. More important than feeding frequency is meal portion size. Luckily, by going through our questionnaire, we will calculate exactly how much your dog should be fed based on age, activity levels and more
Do I need to freeze the food?
One of the benefits of Marleybones meals, is that you don’t need to clear your freezer for ice-cream and just need to store them in a cool, dry place. As a bonus, they take up much less space than the traditional and is easy to stack and store.
Do you have different plan options?
We always recommend feeding your dog 100% Marleybones to guarantee your dog gets all the essential vitamins and minerals needed to maintain a healthy diet – all day, every day. We do however have a mixed plan option, if you wish to mix Marleybones with other food & the usual treats and snacks.
Why does the meals change colour from time to time?
Dont worry, that's actually perfectly normal. We use 100% natural ingredients and the batches will therefore look slightly different from time to time - just as nature intended!
Is Marleybones a nutritionally complete dog food?
Yes! Health is one the main drivers behind Marleybones and we want to make the best and most delicious dog food as we possibly can. As long as your dog eats our food as recommended by our nutritional consultation, you can be assured your dog is getting everything it needs. We’ve worked alongside dedicated experts in dog nutrition and been taste tasters ourselves!
How is quinoa different from rice?
A cup of quinoa contains twice the protein and more fibre than the same amount of white rice. We chose it for its obvious superfood health benefits.
What is the protein content of Marleybones meals?
Our dining menu contains 60% fresh meat or fish, all locally sourced right here in Great Britain. Our chickens are free-range, beef and lamb are grass fed and our Scottish salmon grow at very low stocking densities. This means higher nutrients and proteins in our meals! Since our meals aren’t extruded and ‘dry’ like kibble, it may look like it is low in protein levels reaching between 11-15%. This is because we keep all the natural, flavorsome juices inside our meals giving it a higher moisture content than dry food. Calculating our meals’ protein levels on a ‘dry matter’ basis, they actually contain between 44-50%.
Do you add bones to your recipes?
We believe in using all the animal parts with health benefits for dogs. It is less wasteful for our earth and creates healthier diets for our dogs. Animal bones contain calcium and phosphorus which are necessary for a complete and healthy diet. That’s why we use ‘whole chickens’ in our chicken menu - including everything from the fillets to wings and drumsticks. Same goes for our salmon recipe, containing 85% pure salmon meat together with other parts that boost the natural nutrient levels. Our beef and lamb menu do not contain all animal parts, as we find some compromise the health standard. Instead, we make sure to use only organs, such as liver and heart, with numerous health benefits, delicious taste and often has even higher vitamin levels than what is known as muscle meat (minced meat)
Do you add offal to your recipes?
We believe in using all the animal parts with health benefits for dogs. It is less wasteful for our earth and creates healthier diets for our dogs. This is why we add offal, such as liver and heart, in our lamb, beef and chicken recipes, for its numerous health benefits, delicious taste and often has even higher vitamin levels than what is known as muscle meat (minced meat). If your pooch requires an offal free diet, our salmon is ideal for you!
Why do you add vitamins and minerals to your meals?
Right from the get-go, the purpose of Marleybones was to create complete and nutritionally balanced meals for pooches. This means that feeding your dog the recommended daily amount will ensure they get everything they need to stay healthy and energized every day (with the added benefit of a cuddly, shiny coat!). Ingredients can naturally fluctuate in their nutritional content making it very difficult to guarantee a complete meal without adding some vitamins and minerals. We try to keep it as natural as possible, but we also want to be sure your dog is getting everything it needs - every time. We want to offer your dog a complete, delicious dog dining experience you can feel good about!
Does Marleybones add sugar to its meals?
There is no added sugar in any of our meals, but it does occur naturally in some of the veggies we use (carrots, peas...).
Do you have a vegetarian or vegan menu?
It’s something we’re considering, but we want to research this topic more. Unfortunately, dogs cannot digest plant proteins as well as those found in meats, so we want to make absolutely sure we have a healthy and digestible product before adding it to our product line. Please do contact us if you’re interested.
Why can’t I just cook dog food at home?
You can! However, recent research found 95% of recipes online to be lacking in important nutrients for dogs. If the recipe hasn’t been properly calibrated, serious complications from nutrient deficiencies could arise. All Marleybones meals have been through lots of tests to make sure your dog always gets the nutrients it needs.
Is Marleybones grain-free?
Yes – all our meals are grain-free! Many believe quinoa is a grain, but it is in fact a seed that is harvested from a tall, leafy plant. Quinoa is actually more of a relative to spinach or beets. Because they are cooked like a grain, they seem to get lumped into the same grain category.
Where do you source your ingredients from?
As the first dog food company in the world (we’re fairly sure of this!), we trace every ingredient from soil to bowl through blockchain technology. To support local communities and save airmiles, we source 98% of our produce from the UK. Even the chia seeds and quinoa, traditionally grown in warmer countries, comes from British soil.
Do you have a list of all your ingredients?
Transparency is at the heart of Marleybones and that goes for our ingredients too. Every ingredient is listed here on our website and again on our packaging. We trace everything from farm to bowl and you will be able to access all the same information as we do.
Are your ingredients organic?
Some, but not all ingredients we use are organic. We have made sure to only source from farmers that care for the wellbeing of their farming animals and our vulnerable earth - you can even virtually meet every farmer behind Marleybones and we’re quite sure you’ll be impressed with what you see. By subscribing to Marleybones, you and your dog are directly supporting local UK farmers, caring for what they do as well as their surrounding environment. Marleybones is working to change the wider issues within the pet food industry. We believe there is a lack of transparency and honesty which needs changing. We have also work tiredly to ensure a high animal welfare across our entire supply chain. That’s why we only source free-range chickens, grass-fed beef and lamb and salmon from a hand-rearing and all-natural health-controlled environment. We know where our food comes from, what ingredients have been used, and how they have been grown. Doing good by eating good!
I can see fat in my dog’s meals. Why is that?
All our meals are made from fresh meat and will be cooked in its own juices, giving our meals its natural and delicious flavour. With fresh meat comes natural marbling, however we have made sure to source as lean meat as possible. That being said, not all fat is bad! Chia and linseeds are high in omega 3 fatty acids, which are great for keeping a healthy brain and a shiny coat
Is Marleybones raw?
No – we gently steam cook our food! Often raw food is of great quality, but we do think dealing with raw food has its challenges especially when ensuring it contains all essential nutrients for a complete diet. Instead, we gently steam cook our meals which kills pathogens and may increase taste and smell.

What is blockchain?
The blockchain technology has been the subject to many interpretations but is, simply explained, a new way of organising and exchanging digital information. Luckily, we’re not here to give you a lecture about some bitcoin-crypto-currency, because our kind of blockchain is completely different. We use what is referred to as Blockchain as a Service (BaaS). The exact nature of BaaS deployment may depend on the provider and platform specifics. Generally, the idea of BaaS is to provide a reliable and transparent source of facts across administrative domains.
How does the technology work?
For the tech-nerds out there (no judgement, we’re with you!) here’s a bit more details. The blockchain technology has been the subject to many interpretations but there is generally speaking two core components of blockchain technology: (1) hash functions and (2) Public Key Infrastructures (PKI). Hash functions concern data integrity and are used to generate hash pointers which links blocks of transactions together in a chain. It is the hash pointer that orders the blocks and establish the integrity within them, which is necessary to create a persistent and tamper-evident record of a relevant transaction. PKI regards identity authentication and functions to authenticate the parties related with each transaction. While hash functions and PKI have been known for quite a while, it was not until Satoshi Nakamoto combined the two components to create what we now refer to as blockchain.
Why do you use blockchain technology?
At the core of Marleybones is transparency. We want there to be no doubt of what our meals contain, where ingredients come from and what credentials they hold. Blockchain is the underlying technology of our platform, created to show every step of the process all through our food supply chain. We use a third-party verifier, so you can be sure what you see is what you get. Simply go to each meal to see the product journey or scan the QR-code on your dog’s meals using your smartphone.
What is the 17 global goals?
In 2015, world leaders agreed to 17 Global Goals (officially known as the Sustainable Development Goals or SDGs). These goals have the power to create a better world by 2030, by ending poverty, fighting inequality and addressing the urgency of climate change.
Why does Marleybones aim to support the 17 SDG's?
We all want to do what is best for our four-legged friends. But we have all seen images of oceans and beaches filled with plastic. We have all seen chickens cramped in cages. It is time to think of the earth outside the comfort of our home. At Marleybones, we aim to create the pawfect meals, with every step of the supply chain being as sustainable as it is delicious. This does good for your dog, our planet and you.
Does Marleybones use free-range chickens?
Yes! Animal welfare is at the core of Marleybones and we only source free-range chickens. Take a look at our ‘Meals’ section to find out more. You will be able to see photos and get information of our happy, outdoor chickens looking for that next fat, juicy worm!
Why is free-range chicken better?
Chickens are given good natural light and space to roam around outside from an early age. Slower growing breeds are used, which means birds develop at a natural rate. The birds are only given antibiotics if absolutely necessary to restore their health. To meet our increasing demand for white meat, and to keep prices low, farmers have been forced into new levels of efficiency. They now produce chickens that grow at phenomenally unnatural rates and have the equivalent amount of space as an A4 piece of paper to live on. We will not partake in this practice.
What is the difference between free-range and free-run chickens?
Free-range birds get to explore the outdoors including all-natural behaviors such as ground scratching, perching, dust bathing and eating those juicy, fat worms! Free-run means the birds are housed in a cage-free, but indoor environment. They are free to move around, but never get to see the light of day.
Are there health benefits from using free-range chickens?
There are major health benefits associated with using free-range chickens! Aside from the obvious animal welfare issues with caged chickens, these chickens are also not as healthy as free-range chickens. One report reveals intensively reared chickens contain as much fat, gram for gram, as a Big Mac. Plus, they are routinely fed antibiotics to prevent disease caused by living in such close confinement, leading to a rise in drug resistance. At the opposite end of the farming spectrum, slow-growing, better-fed chickens contain less saturated fat and higher omega-3 fatty acids, which are good for your dog's heart. These birds are also only given antibiotics if absolutely necessary to restore their health.
Is your beef and lamb grass-fed?
Marleybones has made sure to only source from the happiest and most sustainable farms, including our cattle and lamb which are brought up outdoors and graze on the abundant natural grass-land of Wales.
What is the main difference between grass-fed and corn-fed?
Grass fed beef and lamb is more nutritious, better for the environment, and better for the farmer. Grass fed beef and lamb refers to the animal’s diet and it includes much more than just grass, covering herbs, flowers, clover and other legumes, which is collectively referred to as ‘pasture’. Grass fed beef is furthermore leaner than the grain-fed alternative and yet has higher levels of good fats such as omega 3. Grain-fed cows eat (mostly) an unnatural diet based on corn and soy during the latter part of their lives.
How is your salmon raised?
Our Scottish salmon comes from a hand-rearing and all-natural health-controlled environment. They grow up at very low stocking densities (99% water, 1% fish) to ensure a happy, healthy growth without the use of antibiotics, growth promotors or GMO. Our salmon also have one of the world’s best FIFO (fish in, fish out) ratios, of less than 1:1, greatly reducing dependency on wild fish. This is achieved by only feeding fishmeal produced from trimmings of wild fish destined for human consumption.
Are there any health benefits from using hand-reared salmon?
The all natural hand-rearing and all-natural health control contribute to the succulent flavour, essential vitamins and omega-3s. Their pink colour derives solely from their organic feed - no growth promoters or chemical supplements are used.
What does hand-reared mean?
The practice of hand-rearing means being hands-on in every detail and not relying on machines or cameras to know how the fish are doing. Our farmers are on the water EVERY day to feed and observe the fish. An entirely hands-on operation.
